Round rugs are having a moment - and for good reason. They break up the rectangular monotony of most rooms and add something that a standard rug just can't. When that round rug is also handmade in Morocco from natural wool, it becomes something genuinely special.
At Teppich Marokko, most of our round rugs come in two styles: Beni Ourain and Azilal. They look very different from each other, but both are made the same traditional way - by hand, in the Atlas Mountains, by Berber artisans who've been doing this for generations.
This guide will help you understand both styles, figure out which one works for your space, and know what to look for before you buy.
What Makes a Round Moroccan Rug Different?
Shape aside, a round Moroccan rug is made the same way as a rectangular one - hand-knotted wool on a loom. The circular shape is achieved during the weaving process, not by cutting a rectangular rug into a circle afterward. This matters because a properly made round rug has clean, finished edges all the way around, not raw or fraying sides.
Round rugs are rarer than rectangular ones, which means less variety and sometimes higher prices. But they fill a specific visual role in a room that no rectangular rug can replicate.
Beni Ourain Round Rugs
A round Beni Ourain rug brings the same thing to a room as the rectangular version - warmth, softness, and a neutral palette that works with everything - but the circular shape adds a softer, more organic feel.
The classic look is ivory or off-white wool with dark geometric lines, often diamond shapes or abstract patterns. The pile is thick and plush. The color comes entirely from the natural wool - no synthetic dyes.
A round Beni Ourain works especially well in rooms where you want texture and warmth without adding color. It lets your furniture and walls do the talking while the rug grounds everything underneath.
Azilal Round Rugs
An Azilal round rug is a statement piece. The colors are bold - reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues - on a white or cream background, with patterns that feel almost like abstract art. Each rug reflects the personal expression of the woman who made it, which means no two are ever the same.
If your room is mostly neutral and needs a focal point, a round Azilal can do that job better than almost anything else. It draws the eye, adds personality, and still feels warm and natural because it's made from real wool.
Which Style Is Right for You?
The honest answer is: it depends on your room and what you want the rug to do.
Choose a round Beni Ourain if your room already has color and pattern elsewhere and you want the rug to add texture without competing. Also a good choice if your style is minimal, Scandinavian, or modern.
Choose a round Azilal if your room is neutral and needs something to bring it to life. Or if you just want something that feels unique and personal - which, given that every Azilal is one of a kind, it genuinely is.
Where to Use a Round Rug in Your Home
Under a round dining table: This is the most natural use of a round rug. The shapes mirror each other, and it frames the dining area cleanly. Make sure the rug is large enough that chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out - usually at least 60cm beyond the table edge on all sides.
Entryway or hallway: A round rug in an entryway makes an immediate impression. It welcomes people in and sets the tone for the rest of the space. An Azilal works especially well here - the colors and pattern say something about the home before you've even walked in.
Living room accent: Instead of a large area rug under the sofa, a round rug can sit in the center of the seating area as an accent piece. Works well layered over a larger neutral flat-weave or jute rug.
Bedroom: Placed at the foot of the bed or on one side, a round rug adds softness to a bedroom without the full commitment of a large rectangular piece. The circular shape feels more relaxed and less formal.
Reading corner or small sitting area: A round rug naturally defines a space within a larger room. Put one under an armchair and a small side table and it creates its own little zone.
As wall art: Both Beni Ourain and Azilal round rugs are light enough to hang on a wall. A round rug hung as wall art looks more intentional than a rectangular one - more like a piece of art and less like a rug that ended up on the wall.
What Size Round Rug Do You Need?
Round rugs are measured by diameter. Common sizes for handmade Moroccan round rugs range from about 100cm (3.3 feet) up to 200cm (6.5 feet) or more.
For a dining table, measure your table diameter and add at least 120cm to get your minimum rug diameter. So a 100cm round table needs a rug of at least 220cm.
For an entryway or accent use, a 120-150cm rug is usually the sweet spot - large enough to make an impact, not so large it takes over the space.
When in doubt, go bigger. A round rug that's too small disappears. One that fills the space properly looks intentional.
How to Tell If a Round Moroccan Rug Is Authentic
Check the back: Flip it over. A hand-knotted rug shows individual knots on the back that mirror the front pattern. A machine-made rug has a uniform fabric backing.
Look at the edges: On a genuine handmade round rug, the edges are finished as part of the weaving process. They should feel solid and consistent all the way around, not fraying or uneven in a way that suggests cutting.
Slight irregularities are good: Handmade means human-made. Perfect symmetry is a sign of a machine. Small variations in pattern, spacing, or shape are normal and expected.
Feel the wool: Real natural wool has a warmth and density to it. Synthetic fibers feel lighter and sometimes slightly plastic.
How to Care for Your Round Rug
The same rules apply as for any natural wool Moroccan rug. Shake it outside regularly to remove dust. Vacuum monthly with a suction-only vacuum - no rotating brush heads. For spills, blot immediately with a clean damp cloth and don't scrub.
A few hours of natural sunlight once or twice a year does the wool good. Avoid leaving it in permanently damp conditions.
Round rugs can be a little trickier to keep in place than rectangular ones. Use a good non-slip rug pad cut to size - it makes a real difference, especially on hard floors.
