Oval Moroccan Rugs: Everything You Need to Know

Oval Moroccan Rugs: Everything You Need to Know

Oval rugs are one of those things most people don't think about until they see one in the right space - and then they can't unsee it. The shape does something a rectangle can't. It softens a room, breaks up hard lines, and fits spots where a standard rug would look awkward or too bulky.

When that oval rug is also handmade in Morocco from natural wool, you're getting something that's both practical and genuinely beautiful. This guide covers what to look for, how to use one, and how to make sure you're buying the real thing.

What Is an Oval Moroccan Rug?

An oval Moroccan rug is made the same way as any other handmade Berber rug - hand-knotted wool on a loom by artisans in the Atlas Mountains. The oval shape is part of the weaving process, not a rectangle that's been trimmed down. A properly made oval rug has clean, finished edges all the way around.

Most oval Moroccan rugs you'll find come in Beni Ourain or Azilal style. Beni Ourain gives you a neutral ivory base with dark geometric lines - minimal and versatile. Azilal brings color and personality, with bold patterns that make the rug a focal point in any room.

Both are made from 100% natural sheep wool. Both are one of a kind.

Why Choose an Oval Rug Over a Rectangle?

It's a fair question. Rectangular rugs are easier to find and fit more spaces by default. So why go oval?

A few reasons. Oval rugs work better under round or oval dining tables - the shapes mirror each other naturally and the rug doesn't stick out at the corners. They also work well in narrow spaces like hallways where a rectangle would feel too rigid. And in a room full of straight lines - furniture edges, doorframes, windows - an oval rug introduces a softness that changes the whole feel of the space.

They're also just less common, which means your room doesn't look like everyone else's.

Where to Use an Oval Rug in Your Home

Under an oval or round dining table: This is the most natural fit. The rug and table echo each other's shape, and the result looks intentional rather than accidental. Make sure the rug extends at least 60cm beyond the table edge on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Hallway or entryway: A long oval rug fits a hallway better than a rectangle in many cases. It softens the corridor without the hard edges of a runner, and it's easier to walk around. An Azilal oval in an entryway makes an immediate impression - guests notice it before anything else.

Bedroom: Placed at the foot of the bed or alongside it, an oval rug adds warmth without the formality of a large rectangular piece. The curved shape feels relaxed and comfortable, which suits a bedroom well.

Living room accent: An oval rug in the center of a seating area - especially layered over a larger neutral base rug - adds visual interest without overwhelming the space. Works particularly well if your sofa and chairs are arranged in a loose, informal way rather than a strict rectangle.

Reading corner: An oval rug under an armchair and floor lamp defines the space within a larger room. The shape naturally draws a boundary around the area without feeling as structured as a square or rectangle would.

As wall art: Both Beni Ourain and Azilal oval rugs can be hung on a wall. An oval shape on a wall looks more deliberate than a rectangle - more like something chosen for its form, not just its pattern.

How to Choose the Right Size

Oval rugs are measured by their two dimensions - length and width. Common sizes for handmade Moroccan oval rugs run from roughly 100x150cm on the smaller end up to 180x270cm or larger.

For a dining table, add at least 120cm to each dimension of your table to get the minimum rug size. So a 90x150cm oval table needs a rug of at least 210x270cm.

For a hallway, the width of the rug should leave a clear walking margin on both sides - ideally at least 20-30cm of floor visible between the rug edge and the wall.

For accent use in a living room or bedroom, measure the area you want to define and choose a rug that fills it comfortably. When in doubt, go bigger - a rug that's too small always looks like a mistake.

How to Spot a Genuine Handmade Oval Rug

Check the back: Flip the rug over. A hand-knotted rug shows individual knots on the back that mirror the front pattern. A machine-made rug has a uniform fabric-like backing with no visible knots.

Look at the edges: The edges of a genuine handmade oval rug are finished as part of the weaving - not cut or trimmed after the fact. They should feel solid and consistent all the way around the curve.

Irregularities are a good sign: Handmade means human-made. Slight variations in pattern, spacing, or the curve of the edges are completely normal. A machine-perfect oval with no variations is a sign it wasn't made by hand.

Feel the wool: Natural sheep wool has weight, density, and a warmth that synthetic fibers don't replicate. If the rug feels light or slightly plastic, it's probably not genuine wool.

The price: A real handmade oval rug takes weeks of skilled work. If the price seems too low for what's being described, trust that instinct.

How to Care for an Oval Moroccan Rug

Natural wool is durable and low maintenance. Shake the rug outside every week or two to remove dust. Vacuum once a month using suction only - avoid rotating brush heads, which can pull the fibers over time.

For spills, blot immediately with a clean cloth. Don't scrub. A small amount of white vinegar diluted in water handles most fresh stains without damaging the wool.

A few hours of natural sunlight a couple of times a year is good for the wool and keeps the rug fresh.

Use a non-slip rug pad underneath, cut to match the oval shape. Oval rugs on hard floors can shift more than rectangular ones - a good pad fixes that and also protects your floor.
